Getting Started




On FirstVoices, either sign in into be taken directly to your language site or choose a language on the "Explore Languages" page.

Once you have selected a language site, click "Learn our Language" to begin.


Finding words




You can look for words by searching, browsing categories or browsing alphabetically. You can also view flashcards. To start, click on "Words".

Searching

  • In the search box, type the word you're looking for or its English translation
  • Results will show you words in the language you're learning, the definition, and possibly an audio recording of the word being spoken, an image and/or the part of speech
  • The "Default" search will display entries that have your search within the word or definition, as well as providing additional options for what you may have been searching for
    • For example, searching for "house" may also display "mouse" and "horse" as close matches, as well as the word for "house" and "houses in between"
  • More advanced search options allow you to search in more specific ways; see the video below for more details


Using flashcards

You can view words or phrases as flashcards. Flashcards show the words with their translations in a printable format.

Click Flashcards to change the layout of your search results.

Browsing categories

  • You'll see options to browse by categories along the left side menu
  • Click on an option to see all the words that have been tagged with that category

Browsing alphabetically

  • You'll see options to browse by a letter of the alphabet at the top left of the page
  • Click on an option to see all the words that start with that letter



Finding phrases




You can look for phrases by searching, browsing phrase books or browsing alphabetically. To start, click on "Phrases".

Searching

  • In the search box, type the phrase (or a part of the phrase) you're looking for or its English translation
  • Results will show you phrases in the language you're learning, the definition, and possibly an audio recording of the word being spoken, an image and/or phrase book
  • The "Default" search will display entries that have your search within the word or definition, as well as providing additional options for what you may have been searching for
    • For example, searching for "home" displays all phrases that include "home" in the definition
  • More advanced search options allow you to search in more specific ways

  • You'll see options to browse by phrase books along the left side menu
  • Click on an option to see all the phrases that have been tagged with that phrase book




Finding songs




You can look for songs by searching or browsing. To start, click on "Songs".

Searching

  • In the search box, type the name (or part of the name) of the song you're looking for
  • To listen to the song, click "Continue To Song"

Browsing songs

  • The "Songs" page will show you all the songs uploaded for that language



Finding stories




You can look for songs by searching or browsing. To start, click on "Stories".

Searching

  • In the search box, type the name (or part of the name) of the story you're looking for
  • To listen to the story, click "Continue To Story"




  • Click "Open Book" to start the story.

  • When you're finished, click "Close book" to end the story.

Browsing stories

  • The "Stories" page will show you all the stories uploaded for that language
